Jordan Singles Tour......An excellent opportunity for single travellers on this special singles tour of Jordan. Red Sea, Dead Sea, fascinating Petra, lively modern cities rubbing shoulders with streets that hark back to the Stone Age, castle keeps that have kept their looks since the Crusades; Jordan is every traveller's holy grail.Your trip at a glanceDay 1 London - Amman (day flight) With the capital as our base, we visit the Graeco-Roman city of Jerash, hidden under desert sands until its excavation 70 years ago. The result is one of the best preserved cities of its kind. Our tour includes the colonnaded Oval Plaza, streets where the ruts worn by Roman commuter chariots can still be seen and echoing open-air amphitheatres that are still used today. Towers, moat and drawbridge - even a stone bathtub - survive at Ajloun Castle, built in 1184AD by one of Saladin's generals to send the infidel packing. Back in Amman, palaces around the ancient citadel, lively souks and grand marble modern mosques provide the highlights. Petra Glows Red We visit Madaba, 'City of Mosaics', where St. George's Orthodox Church houses a two-million piece jigsaw depicting Jerusalem and other centres of pilgrimage. From the top of Mount Nebo, Moses' final resting place, views stretch as far as the Holy City and the Dead Sea. Fortress-building Crusader-style is the theme explored in Kerak Castle where plain, sturdy walls conceal a dark maze of stone-vaulted halls and passages, the best of them underground. The
Nabataean's cunning complex of city dams and water channels around Petra are as
nothing compared to the drama and sheer theatre of buildings carved out of
rose-red sandstone. None is more dramatic than the Treasury, reached after a
walk along the Siq, a narrow gorge that pierces through the cliffs. Horse riding
here in Petra is a relaxing way to see some of the sights. As the sun sets, it's
easy to imagine caravans laden with incense, silk and spices kicking up the dust
as they crept over the horizon, adding to Petra's wealth as trade routes
stretched from China overland to Rome. Sink in Aqaba, Float on the Dead Sea Our trip south to the coast cuts through the desert of Wadi Rum, dramatic plains framed by layercake mountains, some named by T.E. Lawrence as the 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom'. Amid this favourite haunt of film makers, share tea under a traditional Bedouin tent and experience an included sunset 4x4 jeep excursion. Why not sample another mode of transport; an optional camel safari? Reaching the Red Sea, dust yourself off with a dip amid the brightly coloured coral reefs and lap up a quiet day of leisure on the beach. Our route back to Amman pauses at the Dead Sea for a bob and a float on its salty waters. At 420 metres below sea level, one of the lowest points on earth, the 'sea of salt' is well-known for its mineral-rich mud and waters, boasting health properties. Take a soak and see for yourself! Important Information A reasonable level of fitness/mobility is required as we include plenty of sightseeing/travelling; sometimes with early starts. Upgrades from £495 (Business Class) one way.
