It is universally agreed that the sight of the great Treasury
of Petra at the end of the narrow ‘siq’ is one of the most exciting experience
for travellers. The sense of discovering something very special is the same
today as it would have been for the great caravans that passed through Petra on
their way to the Orient. But there is more to Jordan than just Petra as the
visitor will quickly discover. Jordan has a rich and colourful history. Jerash
reminds us that Jordan was a prosperous Roman province and there are churches
from the Byzantine period and castles from the times when the Umayad dynasty
ruled here.

Tour
Itinerary...
Day 1
We fly from London Heathrow to Amman where we stay for the first three nights of
the tour at the centrally located 4 star Hotel Geneva.
Day 2
Our first morning will be spent in Amman where we will visit the city’s
Archaelogical Museum to see the fine displays from sites around the country.
During the afternoon we drive out of the city into the surrounding countryside
and see a selection of the beautiful and romantic desert castles that dot the
landscape, including the Azraq Castle which was used by Lawrence during the Arab
revolt.
Day 3
In the morning we will explore Jerash, one of the finest and best-preserved
Roman sites to be found anywhere. Prosperous from the time of Alexander the
Great, it was conquered by Pompey in 63BC. Its altitude of 500 metres makes for
wonderful views over the surrounding fertile countryside which we shall see as
we drive through the Jordan Valley to the excavations at Pella.
Day 4
We leave the capital in the morning and drive along the King’s Highway to Mount
Nebo on our way to the Dead Sea where we spend one night at a 4 star Dead Sea
Spa Hotel. Known as the lowest point on earth, the Dead Sea is fed by the River
Jordan but with no outlet and its high density of salt content, provides a
memorable experience for bathers.
Day 5
Today we proceed on to Petra, stopping on the way to tour the Crusader castle at
Kerak. Built in 1132 as an important defence site, it is part of a string of
immense castles that stretches from Aqaba to Turkey. We will travel on to Petra
where we spend three nights in a 4 star Ptera Panorama Hotel, close to the site.
Day 6
The day is spent in Petra, the ancient site is reached either on horseback or on
foot. Situated at the end of the siq, a narrow passage through a cliff, is the
great Treasury of Petra. There will be plenty of time for you to explore the
other sites of interest, including The Royal Tombs, Qsar El Binty and the Temple
of the Winged Lion. There will be also be free time for you to absorb the unique
atmosphere of this historical site.
Day 7
This morning we will go to Al Beidha or Little Petra as it is known, which is
hidden away in the centre of a hidden gorge and houses some notable tombs,
monuments and intricate passageways.
Day 8
We will drive through the desert to Wadi Rum, which is closely associated with
with T.E. Lawrence. We will discover the route of the grand Hijaz railway
project and see abandoned stations, track and rolling-stock left exactly as they
were by Lawrence and his Arab guerrillas. It was built to transport pilgrims
from Damascus to Mecca and was also used by the Turks to move troops. We drive
back to Amman for the final night at the 4 star Hotel Geneva.
Day 9
We drive to Amman airport for the flight back to London.
