Syria...
One of the cradles of civilisation with biblical sites, Roman cities and Crusader castles, with a Mediterranean coast and desert climate.

Bordering the eastern Mediterranean, Syria is part of a region recognised as the very cradle of civilisation, not least in the central area around the banks of the Euphrates where evidence of an ancient history dates back to the fourth millennium BC. Elsewhere are displayed magnificent ruins of Roman cities and Crusader castles and citadels from the early Middle Ages. But this historic heritage is matched by an impressive wealth of natural scenery, deserts and oases, coastal beaches, cereal plains, olive groves and snow-capped mountains.

Climate: In the west, especially along the coast, Mediterranean conditions prevail with warm summers and mild, moist winters. Here, the climate is comfortable from September to May which is the best time to visit. In the desert country of the interior it is much hotter (often too hot!) and drier.

Jordan...
The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

An ancient civilisation with timeless sites from biblical, Roman and medieval history including fabulous Petra, between the Dead Sea and Red Sea.

An important crossroads of the Middle East, Jordan is a land steeped in history where evidence of many of the world's greatest civilisations can be found. No less impressively, it's a country of dramatic scenic contrasts from the arrestingly beautiful to the ruggedly stark.

Biblical links abound at places like the Sea of Gallilea and Mount Nebo, from which Moses viewed the Holy Land. From later periods splendid Roman sites are scattered throughout the country as well as numerous Crusader castles.

ITINERARY DETAILS

Day 1: Departure
Depart London Heathrow for your flight to Damascus. You will be met on arrival and transferred to your hotel.

Hanania Hotel 2 nights Standard Double Bed & Breakfast

Hanania Hotel, Damascus
The Hanania hotel has been recently restored from an old house in an original and traditional way using only real old stones, woods and accessories to reflect the spirit and history of Old Damascus. The 9 rooms and suites are all designed in a different style so each have a character all of their own. All rooms are a gallery and museum of sorts showing art and historic pieces by famous Syrian artists.

The hotel is made up of different levels, the underground bar and lounge, the ground floor with the courtyard with outside seating, the ‘in-between’ floor housing the gym and sauna room and the first floor houses the rooms themselves. There is also an upper terrace with fabulous views of the Qasioun Mountains and the city itself.  The Hanania hotel is located close to St. Hanania Church on Straight Street, the centre of Old Damascus, a short stroll to many of the famous sites and the souk.

Rest of the day at leisure.

Day 2: Damascus (B/-/-)
Today you will have a full day tour of Damascus.

Legend has it that on a journey from Mecca, the Prophet Mohammed cast his gaze from the mountainside onto Damascus but refused to enter the city because he wanted to enter paradise only once – when he died. In a place that vies for the title of the world’s oldest continually inhabited city, this is but one of thousands of stories.

Syria’s capital is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. At 690m above sea level, it grew up around the Barada River and Ghouta Oasis, which enabled life to be sustained in an otherwise uninhabitable landscape. The focal point is the charming Old City, surrounded by a Roman wall, in which the main covered market lies. In the Middle Ages, Damascus was the centre of a flourishing craft industry, specializing in swords and lace. The city has some 125 monuments from different periods of its history – one of the most spectacular is the 8th-century Great Mosque of the Umayyads, built on the site of an Assyrian sanctuary.

This afternoon includes a panoramic view of Damascus from Mount Qassioun.

Overnight in Damascus.

Day 3: Crac des Chevaliers – Hama – Aleppo (B/-/-)
Today you will drive to Aleppo via Crac des Chevaliers Castle. This is probably the most famous crusader castle in the world built between 1150 and 1250 on a mountain pass between Turkey and Lebanon. You will also visit Hama water wheels en route.

The most famous medieval citadel in the world, Crac des Chevaliers (Qal'at Al-Hosn in Arabic) was built in order to control the so-called "Homs Gap", the gateway to Syria. It was through this passage that Syria communicated with the Mediterranean.
The citadel covers an area of 3000 square metres and has 13 huge towers, in addition to many stores, tanks, corridors, bridges and stables. It was able to accommodate 5000 soldiers with their horses, equipment and provisions for five years. In ancient times the importance of this strategic corridor was immense. It was of crucial importance to the Crusaders and other foreign invaders in their conquest of the coast. The site has been UNESCO registered since 2006.

Hama – The Famous Water Wheels
Hama, situated between Homs and Aleppo on the banks of the Orontes River, is an important agricultural and industrial centre. Except for Damascus, Hama is considered the most picturesque city in Syria and one may wish to take time to relax in its attractive gardens along the river banks.

Yasmeen d’Alep 2 nights Standard Double Bed & Breakfast
Yasmeen d'Alep House is a breathtaking beautifully restored 17th century Arabic house situated in the heart of the old town of Aleppo - Jdaydeh area. It is located within walking distance from the famous Aleppo citadel, the cavern narrowed bazaars, the Omayyad mosque, the national museum and the cathedrals and is one of the most beautiful hotels in Aleppo.

Yasmeen d'Alep has been converted into a charming five star boutique hotel. There are just 8 rooms and suites at Yasmeen d'Alep, ensuring a high level of comfort together with personal and friendly service. Each room has a unique design drawing from the rich artistic tradition of Syria, creating a feeling of elegance and luxury without sacrificing comfort, making this chic hotel a real bijou. To distress and relax there is no better way than to visit the traditional Turkish steam bath (Hammam) and have a deeply relaxing massage or body scrub.

The courtyard is the central area of Yasmeen d'Alep house and all rooms surround it. In the centre of the courtyard, you find the traditional fountain which is used to cool the air during summer time, and in winter the yard is covered above thus creating a warm atmosphere.

14 metres below the ground there is a hand dug cave. It is naturally cool in summer and warm in winter and connects with other nearby caves through tunnels which run underneath the old city. These tunnels have been thought to lead to the Citadel. The renovation of this cave took several months and it has now been turned into a beautiful Turkish Steam Bath which contains three levels: The Outer Section (al-Barrani), the Middle Section (al-wastani) and the Inner Section (al-Jouwani).

The hotel also has a restaurant offering fine Middle Eastern cuisine with a Mediterranean twist. The restaurant opens exclusively for the hotel guests and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Afternoon at leisure.

Day 4: Aleppo (B/-/-)
Today you will have a full day tour around Aleppo including the Citadel, the Grand Mosque, Khans (caravanserais) and the souq (covered market). Historically one of the great commercial centres of the Middle East, Syria’s second city is almost as old as Damascus itself and just as interesting. There is a plethora of ancient buildings, not least the citadel, an immense structure in the heart of the old city.

Aleppo
This is the second capital of Syria 350 km north of Damascus, and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in history. Abraham is said to have camped on the acropolis, which, long before his time, served as the foundation of a fortress where the Aleppo citadel is standing now. He milked his grey cow here, hence Aleppo's name "Halab Al-Shahba".

Overnight in Aleppo.

Day 5: Aleppo – Palmyra (B/-/-)
Today, you transfer to the UNESCO registered site of Palmyra where your visit begins with the Great Colonnade and the Triumphal Arch. Palmyra’s desert fortress lies in the centre of Syria between the Orontes River to the west and the Euphrates to the east.

Located beside a hot-water spring, Afqa, this charming oasis town is most notable today for its breathtaking displays of Roman architecture in the form of its Great Colonnade, theatre, Temple of Bel, Valley of the Tombs and many other magnificent ruins. Overlooking the town is a 17th century Arab castle.

Zenobia Cham Palace Oasis 1 night Standard Double Bed & Breakfast
The hotel was completely renovated and refurbished in 2007 and consists of 130 rooms and suites plus a restaurant, a magnificent terrace overlooking the great colonnade and the Necropolis. The hotel is also just a few metres from Baalshamin temple, offering a unique and breathtaking view on the ruins.

Day 6: Palmyra – Damascus (B/-/-)
The tour of Palmyra continues this morning with visits to the Temple of Bel and Valley of the Tombs.

Temple of Bel
The temple, consecrated to the Semitic God Bel, worshipped at Palmyra as Malakbel, formed the centre of religious life in Palmyra and was dedicated in 32 AD. The temple is built on a hill with stratification indicating human occupation that goes back to the third millennium.

Valley of the Tombs
The Valley of the Tombs is located in an eerie valley, completely empty except for the large stone tombs that inhabit the sides of the mountains. This is the ancient burial site of the Palmyrenes, where the various wealthy families of Palmyra would build these large tower mausoleums to provide a final resting place for their dead. While some of the more elaborate tombs require special permission to visit, a walk through the Valley is still well worth your time for the brief insight into how the Palmyrenes dealt with their dead.

Afterwards return to Damascus with visits en-route to the monasteries of St. Tekla and St. Sergius in Maloula.

Hanania Hotel 1 night Standard Double Bed & Breakfast

Evening at leisure.

Day 7: Damascus - Amman (B/-/-)
Today you will be collected from your hotel and transferred to the Syria/Jordan border. En-route you will visit the UNESCO registered site of Bosra.

Bosra, Syria
Bosra is an extremely ancient city mentioned in the Hieroglyphics of Thutmos III and Akhnatoun in the fourteenth century BC and 1000 years later was the capital of the Nabatean kingdom under the name of Bousra. The city flourished when it became a crossroads on the caravan routes and the official seat and residence of the Imperial Legate.
After the decline of the Roman Empire, Bosra played a significant role in the history of early Christianity. It was also linked to the rise of Islam, when a Nestorian monk called Bahira met the young Mohammad when his caravan stopped at Bosra, and predicted his prophetic vocation and the faith he was going to initiate.
**Our Syrian ground agents will take you through the border crossing. After they have taken care of formalities they will drop you at the Ramtha, Jordanian side of the border, where you will be met by our Jordanian representative who will drive you to Amman, en route visiting the ruins of Jerash and the fort of Ajloun.

Ajloun
Drive to Ajloun to visit its Castle (Qal'at Ar-Rabad) built by one of Saladin's generals in 1184 AD to control the iron mines of Ajloun, and to deter the Franks from invading. The Ajloun castle was expanded in 1214 into its current configuration and is now one of the best preserved and most complete examples of medieval Arab-Islamic military architecture. From the top of the castle, visitors can also enjoy panoramic views into the Jordan Valley and throughout the highlands of north Jordan.

Jerash
Jerash is a close second to Petra on the list of favourite destinations in Jordan. This ancient city is acknowledged to be one of the best preserved Roman provincial towns in the world. Wander amidst the breathtaking ruins with the original temples, theatres, plazas, baths and colonnaded streets. Visit the beautiful amphitheatre and try the remarkable acoustics for yourself.

Arrive in Amman late afternoon where you have evening free to relax.

Canyon Boutique Hotel 1 night Standard Double Bed & Breakfast
Canyon Boutique Hotel located between the Fourth Circle and Al Dakheliyah Circle, in the mid of Queen Noor Avenue, just beside the Jordan Hospital, only 25 minutes away from Queen Alia International Airport. The hotel location makes it very close to all the major recreational and commercial activities in the city, such as Abdoun Circle, Shmeisany commercial district and the new developing commercial centre of Al Abdaly which are all located just few minutes away from the hotel. The hotel location gives it a superior view to all Amman beautiful skylines.

The hotel consist of 29 rooms and suites, each room has its own different interior design, different furniture and bathrooms, which gives each room a unique atmosphere, so each time you are staying with us you will have a new experience of luxury. All the rooms are equipped with espresso machines, plasma TVs and high speed internet connection.

Day 8: Madaba – Mt Nebo – Dana Nature Reserve (B/-/D)
Today you will drive south along the Kings’ Way, visiting Mt. Nebo and the alleged burial site of Moses overlooking the Dead Sea and the Jordan Valley and Madaba with the oldest map of the Holy Land. Then drive through the magnificent scenery of Wadi Mujib to Kerak to visit the Crusader Castle.

Madaba "the City of Mosaics"
Madaba, a small town at the head of the ancient King’s Highway (only 40 minutes from Amman), is covered with fantastic mosaics from the Byzantine era. Many are located in private homes, discovered when owners dug foundations or gardens. At St. George’s Cathedral, they will see the most famous of all - a clearly-labelled mosaic map of Jerusalem and the surrounding areas dated 560 A.D., which has helped archaeologists to identify many important sites in Jordan.

Mount Nebo
Mt. Nebo is just west of Madaba, on a cliff overlooking the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea. Long believed to be the burial place of Moses, Mount Nebo has impressive mosaics and other remains from the 4th & 6th Centuries A.D. including churches, monasteries and hermitages, all now maintained by Franciscan priests living near the site. This is also an outstanding viewpoint, taking in the whole sweep of the Jordan Valley to the rooftops of Jerusalem and Bethlehem.

Kerak
Continue afterwards further south to the village of Kerak, Lunch will take place at local restaurant (at own expense) in the city followed by a visit to the famous castle lies in the biblical land of Moab and was a Moa’ bite stronghold long before the Crusaders built the castle for which it is famous today. Although it was not the first crusader’s castle to be built east of Jordan, its strength and location made Kerak the most important defences guarding the Latin Kingdom’s exposed eastern flank.

Continue to Dana Nature Reserve’s Feynan Wilderness Lodge to overnight. From the main gates of the reserve you will have a local bus transfer to the lodge inside the park. It could be a bumpy ride, but all part of the experience!

Feynan Wilderness Lodge 1 night Standard Double Half Board

Dana Nature Reserve
Dana Nature Reserve covers 308 square kilometres and is a world of natural treasures. It is composed of a chain of valleys and mountains, which extend from the top of the Jordan Rift Valley down to the desert lowlands of Wadi Araba. The visitor to this area will be awed by the beauty of the Rummana Mountain, the mystery of the ancient archaeological ruins of Feinan, the timeless serenity of Dana Village and the grandeur of the red and white sandstone cliffs of Wadi Dana. The Reserve contains a remarkable diversity of landscapes that range from wooded highlands to rocky slopes and from gravel plains to dunes of sand. Moreover, Dana supports diverse wildlife, which includes a variety of rare species of plants and animals; Dana is home to about 600 species of plants, 37 species of mammals and 190 species of birds.

Feynan Wilderness Lodge
Feynan Eco Lodge has been developed by Jordan’s Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature and opened in the summer of 2005. The lodge, also known as the Wilderness Lodge, has been set up as a cool, atmospheric retreat for tourists wishing to explore this undiscovered and archaeologically rich area of Jordan.

Situated deep in Wad Araba’s remote landscape, the Feynan Lodge forms the western gateway of the Dana Biosphere Reserve, and provides an unparalleled experience in desert accommodation. This unique candle-lit Eco-lodge provides 26 uniquely designed rooms for tourists wishing to explore an undiscovered and archeologically rich area of Jordan.

It is an interesting piece of architecture built entirely of local materials and designed by a local architect. Feynan Eco Lodge has the essence of a desert caravanserai. The unique arabesque desert design uses traditional adobe methods and lends a romantic feel to this remote location. However the facilities are quite basic.

The rooms are all en-suite and have private terraces overlooking the arid locality and the steep rocky hills beyond. The hotel is not luxurious by any means, but offer something very different from the larger more traditional hotels in Jordan. The rooms are clean and comfortable and when lit by candlelight are exceptionally pretty.

The building design is lovely; two-story mud structure with 26 rooms on the first floor, and an inner courtyard, terraces, dining room, and other common areas on the ground floor. It had a mix of the past, and the technology of the future: the roof included solar panels that provide hot water for showers and electric power to the kitchen and for bathroom lights.

The RSCN have been keen to incorporate some eco-friendly technologies, which include solar power by day and candlelight at night. The Feynan Eco Lodge is quite advanced and has solar electricity for use in bathrooms and kitchens. The staff are all from the local Bedouin community which makes it an important asset to this remote area.

The location is ideal for walks into the surrounding area, be it the scenery, wildlife or archaeology. The food is something to write home about – locally produced using fresh produce with a range of vegetarian only options.

Day 9: Dana Nature Reserve – Petra (B/-/-)
5-Hour Hike
Included in your stay is a 5-hour hike in the surrounding area of the lodge. You can choose whichever route you would prefer with your guide so long as it can be completed in 5 hours. From Feynan Lodge you could visit the Archaeological Treasures, Copper Mines, a portion of Wadi Ghwayr, or a combination of 2 of these depending on how much you want to spend in each location.
- Archaeological Treasures
- Copper Mines
- Wadi Ghwayr

This afternoon your guide will transfer you to Taybet Zaman Eco-Resort just south of Petra.

Taybet Zaman Hotel 2 night s Standard Double Bed & Breakfast
Along the Desert Highway in the Taybet Mountains lies the old Jordanian village of Taybeh. Once a lively village near the sacred mountains of Petra, it was almost deserted as a living community during the 1960's when its inhabitants moved toward modernization.

After much debate about what to do with the old village, the former Mayor of Taybeh, Abu Firas proposed turning the village into a tourist hideaway, thereby creating a partnership with the local community. The end result was a recycled village - owned, rebuilt, and run by the locals, keeping the community and its heritage alive and spurring growth.

Taybet Zaman was restored with respect to authenticity of materials, environment, and regional style resulting in a preservation of culture, recycling of materials, and an experience its guests will forever remember.

The Petra Taybet Zaman Hotel is distinguished by its bedouin-style rooms. The guest rooms are each uniquely appointed, with private bathrooms, air conditioning and heat, and are tastefully furnished to compliment the village style and setting. All rooms feature satellite TV, direct dial telephones, a mini-bar, hairdryers, and room safes.

Among the resort's amenities are a Turkish Bath, an outdoor swimming pool, museum, Souk (market) where pottery, weaving and other crafts are produced on site; an Arabic bakery, a restaurant with traditional Arabic and international home-cooked specialties, and a bar. Enjoy dancing and nightly entertainment in the village square.

Taybet Zaman has two on-site restaurants: Sahtain Snack Bar, a cosy place where you can enjoy a drink before dinner, or after a day exploring Petra; Sahtain Restaurant is a typically local restaurant representing the regional rural life of the past.

Day 10: Petra (B/-/-)
A full day to visit the many sites of Petra, the city that was carved into the rose-red Sharah Mountains by the Nabateans and lost to Civilization until re-discovered by the Swiss Burkhardt. Walk through the Siq, a narrow and winding fissure between the cliffs, to reach the Treasury, the Roman Theater, the Courts, Qasr Bint Pharaoun, Temple of the Winged Lion and other monuments. A break for optional lunch or you may wish to climb up to the Monastery.

Petra is one of Jordan's national treasures and by far its best known tourist attraction. Much of the appeal comes from its spectacular setting deep inside a narrow desert gorge, a vertical split through the rock strata. The cliff walls soar to 200 metres with chambers hewn from the living sandstone. There are literally hundreds of buildings, ornate facades, tombs, baths and a three thousand seat amphitheatre.

This afternoon you will have time free to explore Petra late afternoon/early evening. The Park closes at 5pm but once you are in the complex, the guards generally allow you to stay to view sunset.

This evening we have arranged for you to take part in a very enjoyable evening cooking some local Jordanian dishes at Petra Kitchen. You will be working alongside local women (under the supervision of the chef) to produce your evening meal in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. This is a truly Jordanian experience and you even get to take away the recipes for the dishes you prepared so you can re-create the dishes at home and impress your friends!

Day 11: Wadi Rum – Bedouin Camp (B/-/-)
Today you will be collected from your hotel and transferred to Wadi Rum where you will venture in a 4x4 vehicle into the Desert on a 2hr Jeep Safari. Overnight under the stars in a local Bedouin camp where dinner is included.

Captain’s Desert Camp 1 night Standard Double Half Board
Stay in a genuine Bedouin camp in the desert, with traditional food, accommodation in tents and entertainment around a well-lit bonfire. You can also hire a local Bedouin guide who will offer you either a 4WD vehicle, or for the more adventurous a camel ride, to explore the area. Please note basic accommodation and communal bathroom facilities.

Wadi Rum
The largest and most magnificent of Jordan's desert landscapes (described by T.E. Lawrence as "vast, echoing and God-like"). The sand stone mountains, matching the colour of knife-edged dunes, can be explored by off-road vehicle, by camel or on foot. In brief, it is a stupendous, timeless place, virtually untouched by humans.

Day 12: Dead Sea (B/-/-)
Transfer back to Dead Sea for an overnight stay.
Dead Sea Movenpick 1 night Standard Double Bed & Breakfast
Set on the northern shores of the Dead Sea at the lowest point on Earth, this deluxe resort, built in traditional village style, offers luxurious rooms, a range of outlets, first-class meeting and leisure facilities featuring the renowned Zara Spa.

The resort has a total of 358 rooms, with about ten different room categories, you can choose a room in the main building, the village or the beachfront with mountain, garden or sea view. The rooms also vary in size, decor and furnishing. Most rooms have either a balcony or a terrace; interconnecting rooms and rooms for physically challenged are also available.

Despite the antique look of the village, all rooms are luxuriously furnished in warm and natural colours. The latest Beach Rooms and Beach Suites are contemporary with modern furnishings and large terraces. Self-controlled air-conditioning, satellite TV, direct-dial phone, coffee and tea-making facilities, hairdryer, minibar and a safe are standard fittings in every room.

Rest of the day at leisure to enjoy the Dead Sea experience!

Dead Sea
The Dead Sea, at 422 meters (1,385 ft) below sea level, is one of the most spectacular natural and spiritual landscapes in the world and the lowest point on earth. The Jordanian east coast of the Dead Sea has evolved into both a religious and health and wellness tourism hub for the region. Spend the day sunbathing, swimming or dining. Relax in the gently lapping waters and be amazed that you can’t sink! Treat yourself to a soothing massage, or try the well-known healing powers of minerals from the sea's muddy floor.
