The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan
An ancient civilisation with timeless sites from biblical, Roman and medieval
history including fabulous Petra, between the Dead Sea and Red Sea.
An important crossroads of the Middle East, Jordan is a land steeped in history
where evidence of many of the world's greatest civilisations can be found. No
less impressively, it's a country of dramatic scenic contrasts from the
arrestingly beautiful to the ruggedly stark.
Biblical links abound at places
like the Sea of Gallilea and Mount Nebo, from which Moses viewed the Holy Land.
From later periods splendid Roman sites are scattered throughout the country as
well as numerous Crusader castles.

Itinerary...
23 October 2009
Today you will take a flight from London Heathrow to Amman Jordan. Upon arrival
at Amman International Airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel.
Intercontinental Hotel, Amman 2 nights Standard Room

24 October 2009
Morning city tour of Amman, visiting the Roman Theater, the Citadel, the
Archeology and the Folklore Museums, old and modern Amman.
Amman
The capital, spread over 19
hills, is a busy commercial centre with markets full of gold, spices and local
handicrafts. Towering above the city stands the ancient Citadel and the regal
columns of the Roman Temple of Hercules; nearby, the Roman theatre is still used
for cultural events.
Afternoon you will visit
Pella (Tabaket Fahel) - Pella is a richly historical and predominantly
unexcavated small village that was previously ruined in the 8th
century by an earthquake. It is also a delightful natural setting of rolling
green plains, lush plantations and forested hills. On a clear day you can look
across the valley, through the hills of northern Palestine and Israel, and just
discern the hills of Haifa on the Mediterranean coast. After Pella continue to
Um Qais, Gedara , for a spectacular view of the Sea of Galilee, the Yarmouk
River and the Golan Heights.
Pella
Magnificently set in a fold of the hills that rise from the Jordan Valley 78 km
north of Amman, Pella; known in Arabic as Tabaqat Fahl; is one of the most
ancient sites in Jordan and a favorite of archaeologists being exceptionally
rich in antiquities. It is perfectly situated, for there is a spring here which
issues into a small river and never runs dry. The tell itself seems to have been
continuously occupied since Neolithic times for some flints from this period
have been found there; and some recent finds 2 km north of the tell even date to
Paleolithic times, around 100,000 years ago.
25 October 2009
A late morning tour of Jerash (Gerasa of antiquity), the best-preserved city of
Roman times, to visit its theaters, temples, churches and colonnaded streets.
Jerash
This ancient city is acknowledged to be one of
the best preserved Roman provincial towns in the world. Amidst breathtaking
ruins wander among the original temples, theatres, plazas, baths and colonnaded
streets. Visit the beautiful amphitheatre and try the remarkable acoustics for
yourself.
Drive on to Ajloun to tour the 12th
century Saracen Castle built by one of Saladin’s lieutenants in the campaign
against the Crusaders.
Then continue to the Dead Sea - the
lowest spot on Earth, and experience floating inwaters. Dead Sea
Dead Sea Movenpick 1
night Standard Room Bed & Breakfast
Dead Sea
Half an hour from Amman, in the Great Rift Valley, this is the lowest point on
the surface of the earth, more than 400 metres below sea level. The
exceptionally buoyant water, ten times saltier than the sea, is believed by many
to have curative powers, hence the presence of several thermal spa hotels.
To reach this unique spot, the visitor enjoys a short 30 minutes drive from
Amman, surrounded by a landscape and arid hills, which could be from another
planet. En route a stone marker indicates "Sea Level", but the Dead Sea itself
is not reached before descending another 400 meters below this sign.
26 October 2009
Drive south along the Kings’ Way to Petra, visiting Madaba with the oldest map
of the Holy Land, and its Mosaic School, Mt. Nebo and the alleged burial site of
Moses overlooking the Dead Sea and the Jordan Valley. Then drive through the
magnificent scenery of Wadi Mujib to Kerak to visit the Crusader Castle.
Madaba
Drive along the 5,000-year old 'King's Highway' to the 'City of Mosaics', home
to the 6th century map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land created from 2 million
pieces of coloured stone.
In many respects Madaba is a typical East Bank town which differs in one major
aspect: underneath almost every house lies a fine Byzantine mosaic. Many of
these mosaics have been excavated and are on display in the town's museum, but
it is estimated that many more lie hidden waiting to be discovered.
Mount
Nebo
Mt. Nebo is just west of Madaba, on a cliff overlooking the Jordan Valley and
Dead Sea. Long believed to be the burial place or Moses, Mount Nebo has
impressive mosaics and other remains from 4th. And 6th. Century A.D. churches,
monasteries and hermitages, now maintained by Franciscan priests living near the
site.
Believed to be the site where Moses is buried, this is the outstanding viewpoint
in the region taking in the whole sweep of the Jordan Valley to the rooftops of
Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
Kerak
Continue afterwards further south to the village of Kerak, Lunch will take place
at local restaurant in the city followed by a visit to the famous castle lies in
the biblical land of Moab and was a Moa’ bite stronghold long before the
Crusaders built the castle for which it is famous today. Although it was not the
first crusader’s castle to be built east of Jordan, its strength and location
made Kerak the most important defences guarding the Latin Kingdom’s exposed
eastern flank. End the visit then transfer directly to the hotel in Petra.

27 October 2009
A full day to visit the many sites of Petra, the city that was carved into the
rose-red Sharah Mountains by the Nabateans and lost to Civilization until
re-discovered by the Swiss Burkhardt. Walk through the Siq, a narrow and winding
fissure between the cliffs, to reach the Treasury, the Roman Theater, the
Courts, Qasr Bint Pharaoun, Temple of the Winged Lion and other monuments. A
break for optional lunch or you may wish to climb up to the Monastery.
Petra
One of Jordan's
national treasures and by far its best-known tourist attraction. Much of the
appeal comes from its spectacular setting deep inside a narrow desert gorge, a
vertical split through the rock strata. The cliff walls soar to 200 metres with
chambers hewn from the living sandstone. There are literally hundreds of
buildings, ornate facades, tombs, baths and a three thousand seat amphitheatre.
Best seen early morning or at sunset.
28 October 2009
Visit the Wadi Rum Desert (with a short ride in a 4x4 vehicle) and its awesome
moon-like landscape, which provided the location for the film “Lawrence of
Arabia”. Continue to Aqaba, Jordan’s only seaport city.
Wadi Rum
The largest and most magnificent of Jordan's desert landscapes (described by
Lawrence as "vast, echoing and God-like"). The sandstone mountains, matching the
colour of knife-edged dunes, can be explored by off-road vehicle, by camel or on
foot.
Aqaba
When fantasy, sun and sea meet the charms and atmosphere of antiquity, the
visitor can find himself, at any time of the year, at the 13th century Red Sea
resort of Aqaba, which was in ancient times, the main port for shipments from
the Red Sea to the Far East.
For relaxation, water sports, and winter warmth, Aqaba is warm, sunny and
inviting, fringed with palm trees, lapped by the crystal clear waters of the
Gulf of Aqaba, cooled by a steady northerly breeze, and ringed by mountains that
change in colour with the change of the hours. Snorkelling, water skiing, wind
surfing, parasailing, fishing and a variety of other water sports, including
unsurpassed scuba diving are just some of the popular activities to partake in.
